My theory is Stafford told the Rams he will retire after this year
During salary negotiations I think Stafford probably told the Rams it's his last year. The contract still hasn't been signed/published and the FO is positioning themselves for life after Stafford. I dunno, just a hunch.

Re: My theory is Stafford told the Rams he will retire after this year
Everyone is assuming that Rams will use the 2 first round picks to move up in the draft for a QB. But can they afford a rookie leading the team when they are perennial playoff contenders.. maybe plan is to use the 1st rounders on a trade for another vet!

JG is also an option to start next year as a bridge.

Just wrote on another thread that I just think the Rams are more likely to package up picks for a sure thing like they did with Stafford… I reckon Joe Burrow is the guy they go after.. will cost them

Re: My theory is Stafford told the Rams he will retire after this year
The reason I think it’s Burrow is because I don’t think he is happy in Cincinnati and I just feel he is a McVay type of QB. Herbert would be my second choice.. I don’t think they will do that for Lawrence or Prescott.BrooklynRam74 wrote: ↑April 25th, 2025, 7:36 amCincinnati can have both our 2026 1st Rounders and our 2027 and change as well, but I give it a 1% chance, as evidenced by their re-signing of Chase and Higgins.
But you're on the right track. Could be a youngish "vet" like Lawrence, Herbert category.

Re: My theory is Stafford told the Rams he will retire after this year
Yeah he would be crazy in McVays system.. I think it comes down to what’s on offer and how much he wants to move… same when Stafford came over… it will be at least 3 #1 and some players. Price will be steep and I think they are stockpiling for a big move!!BrooklynRam74 wrote: ↑April 25th, 2025, 7:43 amMCVAY's type of Quarterback? He's ANYBIDY IN THE WORLDS type of Quarterback! Tell me, if YOU were Bengals or Chargers, honestly, would YOU be looking to move either one of these???

I totally get your point DVA, and had the Bengals let Burrows top 2 weapons go it would be a conversation. But yeah, stockpiling for a big move? I agree.
I agree, who wouldn't want Burrows or Herbert? Problem is not many teams will trade their known QB. Stafford was a complete anomaly. Most only trade QBs when they are on the down-slope...Watson, Wilson, etc. I think Burrows will be happy with his receivers being signed, and it looks like they are now working on defense. I think it is a pipe dream, but can't count it out with McVay.
I think they are scoring picks to move up in the draft next year.
I think Stafford plays 2 more years...unless he wins a SB this year.

The first rounder fell in their lap, there is no master plan. There is so much hype about Arch Manning but we haven't seen what he can do yet. The Nussmeier kid out of LSU looks really good.

I think Aller at PSU is also a good one.
It did occur to me...what if they think Jimmy G is good enough and they use the 2026 fire power to move up for a guy like OSU WR Jeremiah Smith? It's so early, who knows what could happen next year?

Burrows and Herbert will retire with their respective teams. Let's have real conversations about what their plan is. There are multiple college QB's in play here. let's see what happens in college this upcoming yr

Re: My theory is Stafford told the Rams he will retire after this year
The only scenario the Bengals trade Burrow is if it's a repeat of the Stafford trade. 33-34 years old, team going nowhere, and they need to clean house.
Stop with the "Rams are stockpiling picks to trade for Joe Burrow".

Stafford will be back in 2026; some of you underestimate his drive to win. We will grab one of these 4 young QBs next draft. Not at all sure which one at this time. I will be watching Arch real closely this season.

Re: My theory is Stafford told the Rams he will retire after this year
Well, the Rams figure to have plenty of players still operating on cheap rookie contracts next year, so they can presumably afford to pay Matthew Stafford that much ($50 million/season) if necessary in 2026.
However, they definitely need to acquire a top rookie QB prospect in next year's NFL draft, with the opportunity which they have somewhat unexpectedly been given... 8-) :P

Re: My theory is Stafford told the Rams he will retire after this year
I’ll make it more simple.
Paying a QB that is say the 20th best QB in the league $50 million, that much of the cap, makes it impossible to win.
There’s 2 ways to win in the NFL. Pay a QB on a rookie deal and build up the rest of the team. Or pay a superstar QB. Stafford is neither. Paying Stafford at near 40….cmon. The Rams will be dreadful if that is their cap situation. This absolutely has to be his last year.
Stafford was 12th last year in QBR. What do you think he’s to be two years later? You can’t give a guy like that that amount of cap space.

bro you need to go get laid or something. this doomsday mentality is ignorant. let's see how Stafford plays this upcoming year then we can talk. He played well enough last year to almost get them to a SB and this offense is going to be better this year with the players they have added.Truth wrote: ↑April 27th, 2025, 9:45 amI’ll make it more simple.

Rams draft a QB 2026, he sits and learns.
Stafford plays his last year 2026, Retires.

Re: My theory is Stafford told the Rams he will retire after this year
Unless there were to be crippling injuries on offense (including possibly to himself), such as the Rams experienced early last season, I'm figuring that Matthew Stafford would at least remain in the 10-12 range for starting QBs. His skill-position support appears to have improved over last year, with a receiving TE and a change-of-pace RB, that's assuming that Sean McVay will remember to play them occasionally.
Isn't Stafford being paid around $40 million/season? For a successful starting QB in the NFL not on a rookie contract, that's hardly a terrible situation.
The guy was the second-highest-paid rookie in league history, wasn't he...?? :? ;)

Seriously. Truth has run to every thread to complain and cry about every pick. He was also the guy that criticized Verse for not getting sacks last year. He also wanted to fire Shula and cut Karty after he missed a few FG's.
What a dope. Nobody wants to listen to it.

I won't even waste my time responding to him any more. Ranking Stafford as the 20th best proves he is a little crazy. I guess he gets all his info from Fantasy Football stats.ocram23 wrote: ↑April 27th, 2025, 10:24 ambro you need to go get laid or something. this doomsday mentality is ignorant. let's see how Stafford plays this upcoming year then we can talk.
