Throw More To Running Backs

Post by Wide Open »

Unfortunately, we rarely throw to running backs, which severely limits our offensive potential. With such a talented running back room, Sean has no excuse for continuing to ignore this potentially explosive offensive tactic. We have running backs who can catch the ball, break tackles, and take it home. However, for some reason, Sean refuses to involve them in the passing attack. There has been a lot of talk, understandably, about adding a new plan to get the tight ends involved in the attack, but I still believe that if the offense is going to be exceptional and capable of winning a Super Bowl, it must involve throwing to the running backs downfield, not near the line of scrimmage as they usually do, where they can turn a play into a first down or an explosive. Stafford contributes to this as well. Throw to the backs!

We don't throw to the damn RBs because our O-line is trash and they gotta stay in to block! We've had zero depth on the line forever. The second a starter goes down (which ALWAYS happens), it's a total disaster.

I think it would open up the offense too.

Brazil I was about to say same thing. The RBs are blocking due to porous o line. Hard to develop a screen or release pass to RB when you are blocking.

Indeed, the key to opening up the passing attack is the damn oline. I'm wondering if we make it through Training Camp without any serious oline injuries. How we make it through 17 weeks of combat is beyond me with our current depth.

Sean neglected to throw to running backs even when we had a better o line. It's a fault in scheming.

Nope. Go look at Todd Gurley's stats for receiving targets. Nice try safety

So true. Mcvay fed TG the rock so much (air and ground) that TG knee couldn't hold up.

McVay seems a little less reckless these days and keeps the RB into block. To me when you have a non mobil QB the #1 priority is keeping him upright and lean into his throws. We all see when Stafford has time how good he can be. Kyren is spectacular imo the best in the NFL at blit pickups as a RB he has countlessly saved Stafford on tons of occasions unfortunately in the Philly game he went MIA which was McVays fault. He should have known if we lose yards we will lose and we had 2 really bad plays the FS by Dotson and Limmer completely blowing his assignment.

To be fair when Gurley was here we threw more to him I think McVay doesn't trust the OLine enough. The interior is as good as it will get and Alaric and Rob are slightly problems not big ones but slight. So blitz pick ups really help.

Williams has shown ability out of the backfield .. 3 or so targets a game could be beneficial, but part of the problem is target fixation by Stafford. Add in the receivers we have in Puka and Adams, plus people want more targets for Atwell, when you run through that how many targets are left? It would be great if the guy we drafted turns out to be guy who can convert RZ chances, Lord knows we've need one for a good bit. Williams could also be useful slipping out in those opportunities. Dude has a nose for the EZ, giving more chances to produce would seem to be an intelligent path
GR .. shaken not stirred

I don’t how much I feel like KW puts the ball on the ground, yet looking at those numbers wow maybe the kid deserves a bit more grace. Sheesh.
