One area for dramatic improvement!

Post by GlendoraRam »

I had no idea we sucked this bad on 3th downs. We must improve on this in 2025.

From late Nov of 2024
“Overall, the Rams are 27th in the NFL in third-down conversion rate, moving the chains just 33.9% of the time.”

At the end of the season.
“In the 2024 season, Matthew Stafford's third-down passing completion rate was 30.8%.”

I think this was a BIG reason for the TE pick. He was a 3rd down machine. ILBs will have trouble keeping up with with TF.

Yes, it drove me nuts. 3rd and long was a common theme as well. My opinion is McVay didnt trust our run game, I dont know. But imo, on 1st down, pending what the D set up is, I like to always run. This does two things, 1. Establishes some type of run 2. Tires out Defenses a bit more.

2nd and 5 is usually better then 2nd and 10. This also helps us win TOP. Basically owning the game... but hey, what do I know.. Im just a arm chair QB :D

I would love to see the stat how many times we ran it vs passing on 1st down last season... (Calling on Cornell now 8-) )

Stafford completed 3 first down passes out of 10 tries. That is NOT good.

I'd like to see the stats for TD's in the red zone too. I don't think we are very high up in that category either. TE should help with both.

That only works if the run game WORKS, and that only happens when we BLOCK somebody, which becomes problematic with our backups playing, which we seem to do quite often, along with the fact that our TE's are not exactly movers in the run game. It would be interesting to see the results of our first down runs over the season.
incomplete or short yardage passes are not the only reason for third and longs

Last season was a weird season with all the injuries and rookies. With those rookies now second year players with a ton of playing time and less injuries we should be in the top 10 it will even itself out.

This is also why we drafted another RB in the 3rd round; we need to be able to move the chains on 3rd and three.

Having a different modest-sized RB isn't likely to make that much difference if the blocking in short-yardage situations isn't solid, which clearly was a major issue for the Rams last year... :? ;) :geek:

RAM SEASON!!

Part of the problem was predictable play calling. Rarely, did we throw on first downs...most often it was run run pass...Staff was inconsistent too.

This year we'll see a whole new strategy.

Yep.

Does anybody think we finished the season the way we started it? Did we look like a Super Bowl challenger halfway thru the season? Yet we did. Take yearly stats with some perspective.

Yep a 3rd down TE & 3rd down back won't hurt. As well as getting ahead in the downs with more makeable 3rd down conversions thru a better overall offense = staying healthy as a unit, esp. upfront.
