extension for michel?

Post by ramdave1963 »

how do you guys feel about extending michel? I am voting no. love how hes running and carrying our running game, but hes been injury prone and i feel we could always find a replacement in the later rounds of the draft. I think henderson will play out his contract and sign elsewhere. Ackers is our future. Go Rams!

Cam and Henderson are who we should go with next season. Hopefully we get a comp pick back for Michel. I appreciate what he is doing but we can't afford to spend on the running back position with Cam Akers expected to be the lead back

you are all nuts . I would sign michel 1000000 times before henderson . Akers / michel combo is insane . hendo is very average and made of glass.

I really like Michel in the Rams offense. Having said that I would say probably no. Rather find another one like him on the last year of his rookie deal or using a draft pick on one. Plenty of veteran backs the Rams can add after the draft or anytime leading up to or during the season.

I’m with you Brasil, we know what we have with Cam and Michel. I supported Henderson but he’s definitely injury prone. But hell, what back isnt prone to a injury, even the best… ask the Titans or Giants.

I think we should all put the brakes on the Cam thing...and perhaps lower our expectations a bit.. Apparently no one has ever fully recovered from the injury he's coming back from... whatever... there's always a first time I guess.
However, that, coupled with Hendo's injury woes suggest to me that we should resign and perhaps make Sony the feature back... since he has shown he can stay healthy and Produce...
We're 4-0 since he became the guy...

Michel is a decent #2 RB. He's not worth a big salary, and he certainly won't be paid enough to qualify for a compensatory pick. The Rams ought to use a pick on a rookie to replace him. If not he could potentially return as a cheap #2, (depending on what he wants or where he wants to play). Henderson is currently a minimum wage, change of pace #3.

I'd be ok with spending some cash and bringing in Chase Edmonds to compete with Akers.

You offer him a team friendly contract and if he doesn’t want it then good luck Sony…………….

Again this team should have learned you don’t offer big extensions to RB in both years n $$………………..

I want him back brasil but it has to be damn team friendly…………..

Akers and him would be a good combo. I’d let DH go between the 3……………..

Brasil et al.:

I concur; resign Michel and he will compliment Akers next year.

Henderson can be replaced; there are lots of speedy shifty RBs that can't take NFL pounding on a weekly basis.

Exactly!!...Michel and Akers is a freakin no brainer. I like Henderson but the team needs RB's that can contribute week end and week out, Henderson is not that guy.

Oh for sure, has to be team friendly . NO back is worth big money not even Henry , they will all get injured eventually and their careers are usually short . I was just saying that between him and hendo , if we have to pick one , I would pick him him one hundred times. Just can't compare both . Hendo can only get yards when there is a HUGE HOLE , he can't break tackles , can't drag defenders for extra yards , can't make people miss and has no vision , he runs a straight line . Michel is literally one hundred times better than him , in every aspect of the game .

I would want SM back if deal friendly enough. I don't think it's fair to say another draft pick will be equally good. SM is a proven stud and former 1st rounder. He has stayed healthy all year - most backs go thru some issues. If we do decide to hit the draft again, we need a bigger body type IMO to compliment Akers. By the way- Akers is unproven right now. That injury almost always takes away something. And lastly- every RB I can think of has been out with injury for some time this year. So saying DH cannot stay healthy...well...so goes the RB position.

Henderson will still be under contract so it not a matter of signing Henderson over Michel it's a matter of use the limited money we have to other positions. Cam is our #1 rb, Henderson is already under contract, we can afford to pay Michel to be RB #2

Hendo is an excellent running back but prone to injuries. Sony is durable and I believe he should be extended and play alongside Cam, with Funk is the background.

Michel has gotten an opportunity to show what he can do; and he is making the most of it. He will be looking for a good veteran's contract which some team will pay. Belecheat is smart in that he gets rid of RBs before their big contracts are due; the exact opposite of what the Rams did by re-signing Gurley before they needed to. Michel is a one year rental replacing Akers knowing that Henderson is oft-injured. He will not be back unless Akers is not 100%. He has played his way to a decent contract that the Rams can't afford. Kudos to him; and fortunate for us fans because he has basically saved the Rams season.

All for it, he has done a very nice job, is a 1st round talent we got for a 6th I believe. We just cant trust Henderson moving forward. A roster of Michel, Akers, Henderson and a Funk or Jones would be just fine in my book

We are about to run out of paying dead cap dollars so we should sign him on a 4/$40 million contract and then cut him in August to carry that cap for years.

Henderson is still under contract correct? Michel is going to want a substantial raise, and there are teams out there who will give it to him. My only problem is Cams injury. That's a tough one for a RB

There is no "letting him walk" next year as he is under contract. Hendo is an UFA in 2023 and they can let him walk then but for next year they would be required to cut him and eat the dead money...a little more than 250K

While that's not a huge hit the Rams already have dead money they are paying out and if they are trying to right the ship they might not want to incur any more dead money hits.

I would bet that Hendo is on the squad next year but 2023 is not a given

The dead money figure is irrelevant. The Rams will be accounting for that $272K figure next season irrespective of what happens with Henderson. Henderson is due $1,060,601 next season with no guarantees. The Rams don't need to make any decision about him until Week 1 of the 2022 regular season.

I agree with most of that...I agree he is not QTD any money next year as the dead cap is his signing bonus that they spread the cap hit over the length of the contract and that is what accounts for the Dead cap.

DH is paid about the average for running backs in the NFL (just a touch more) so the Rams have to determine if they can go cheaper than the 1 mil + DH is owed and save a little cap space....I think they do for next year.

my point still stands...it is not letting him walk, it is they have to cut him and take the dead money cap hit without getting any plays from the guy.

I say keep him. Keep the continuity. Stop looking elsewhere. He has proven his worth. I know Akers is the man going forward, but if he suffers an injury can we really count on Henderson to carry the load for an entire season? He has already shown that he is injury prone. Nothing wrong with having 3 very good running backs.
