Better Checkdown Options

Post by Hangtime »

Seems like Stafford doesn't have adequate check down options on pass plays. With his lack of mobility he should have outlets available every attempt. I've noticed that unless he gets rid of the pass right away, he struggles except on roll outs. Stafford was pissed at Jefferson on the deep shot into double coverage. Van got behind both defenders while Stafford's pass was badly underthrown. Then he chews out Van???

I’m just going to go ahead and say it

“Wolfie would have made that throw”

Enough said
Nothing better than a Rams win, but a Niner loss comes pretty close.

We definitely are not throwing to the RB's enough but I highly doubt that changes at this point in the season

TheRams also have Higbee as an outlet but he was injured for a bit....The RB's also have blitz pick up duties that keeps them in place.

Stafford is always looking to push the ball downfield. Sometimes he holds the ball to long trying to give his receivers time to get free. He rarely looks to check down. I think he could work on finding the check down outlets a little sooner but he’s doing what they brought him in for. Stafford goes from touchdown to check down. Goff had developed a problem of going from check down to touchdown. There’s a sweet spot in between that would be best for the Rams. I think Higbee could be a big weapon down the stretch. I liked it when they would keep him in to chip block and then leak out over the middle. He had a stretch in 2019 where he was a beast. Would like to see him utilized more especially against teams that have a potent pass rush.

Stafford isn’t the kind of guy that Goff is. He isn’t check down Charlie. He is always looking for a play downfield. Sometimes it gets him in trouble, but I think we’ve seen the result all year long. Right now we are playing for 2nd seed. That’s pretty amazing considering this is still only his first year with the Rams.

Stafford's pass wasn't badly under-thrown. Stafford put the ball where he wanted it. The receiver saw things differently. Rams RBs don't do a lot of pass-blocking, (outside of double A-gap protection). Henderson rarely even chips and consequently he's normally deployed as a slot or split receiver. Michel is better at blocking but he's not great after a check-down reception. Checking down to RBs has always been a Stafford weakness, partly because he lacks touch and throws everything at 100 mph. It is what it is. Bigger dog, different fleas.

Michel and Higbee in the flat should be his regular outlets after they have completed their blocking assignments.

Of course Wolfie simply relies on his legs and does not need to check down.
