Chris Shula’s Defense: A Tale of Adaption For 2025

Post by GlendoraRam »

Shula’s inaugural season as defensive coordinator in 2024 was a tale of adaptation. Stepping into the role after Raheem Morris left for Atlanta, Shula inherited a defense reeling from the retirement of Aaron Donald, a future Hall of Famer whose presence had defined the Rams’ front seven.

I'm glad I was wrong, and I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements that our defense makes.

I remain skeptical on the D. They're talking the talk. I need to see them walk the walk now...

Still not convinced with Shula; let's see how we do this season.

The whole defense changed after Reeder went out and Shula started blitzing more.
He has to change that up now because teams are aware now.

They still don't have a LB or S that can cover the TE or check down RB, or a shut down corner,
Both LB and DB units last year, were lousy tacklers...
How does Shula fix that if the front office didn't?
They need to cut down the Chunk plays allowed by last years D big time, with mostly the same personnel. hmmm

I think they are hoping Chris Paul Jr will step into the coverage role. He did not allow a TD in 665 coverage snaps during his final year in college.
Also, the OTA reports have been very good on Landman and Dolac, both of whom are regarded as excellent run stuffers.

It’s going to take some time for the new faces to get up to game speed. Hopefully, we won’t see much of Reeder.
The CB group is going to have to step up big time.

10 of the 11 current listed D starters on their depth charge were on the team that lost @Phi in the divisional round, with the only exception being their leading tackler from last year, who was probably among the team leaders in missed tackles too.
I agree totally about Reeder but he is listed as a Starter at the moment. Hope you're right about CP jr. They should start him over Reeder
I think the Secondary could benefit from better LB play for sure.

Certainly questions at levels two and three. But, with the addition of Ford...this D-Line is legit scary. Maybe the best in the league. I cannot WAIT to watch them feast on Darnold and the Seahawks twice this year.

Imo Chis Shula scheme is sound. The issue is tackling. Many of these guys do not have the talent to consistently tackle.

Rams needs some tackling machines on this team. Pooh can tackle, he only missed 3 tackles all of last year and was one of the higest graded run defenders in the NFL.

Nate unfortunately has a missed tackle rate of 9.4 which is considered high.

Chris Paul is college had a 4 percent missed tackle rate which was among the best in college football.

Hoping Chris Paul wins the coverage ILB spot on base defense and plays the MLB when the rams go to their hybrid, one ILB scheme.
