They'll extend him, and then probably burn the team down once the high priced players and their potential success are gone, and start a rebuild. You throw resources at the #2 spot if the starter is injury prone or if you're not sure he's good enough. Having a good, cheap #2 behind Stafford would be a lucky break rather than something we should prioritise.

They could always check back at the Quickie Mart...
They found a pretty good back-up from there once who did a fairly decent job filling in when the starter went down.. ;)
