Same situation/position as last year?

Hello all,
Long time lurker here! Been a fan of the St. Louis now LA Rams since 99.
So one thought that occurred me was that we got rid of Goff because McVay felt that he couldn't beat an elite team like the Packers, Buccaneers, Pats (3 years ago). Most recent example was the Packers last year where the defense played alright but we weren't able to score enough pts. Well, we traded Goff + two first round picks for Stafford who I believe is an upgrade. It is VERY likely we will be in the same situation as last year. Divisional round in Lambeau but with Stafford instead of Goff. Does anyone think Stafford is enough of an upgrade over Goff to put us over the hump? I honestly don't think so. If we do get same results as last year, where does that put us? What's McVay going to do then? We are in literally the same situation minus two first round picks and no cap room to sign other players......
Thoughts?

Stafford is definitely an upgrade over Goff when the pass rush is ferocious but is it enough-probably not because Stafford has not played as well in the second half of the season. If this was week eight I would have said hell yeah Stafford makes us a legitimate SB contender but the slew of late season interceptions and the underthrown deep passes make me wonder if he's hurt??

Hi Mate, and welcome to the forum.
I think when you gamble your draft capital on these big names/salaries and you choose to go down the road of 'upgrading' your QB with a more seasoned veteran to give the team a better chance of getting you over the line then it's a short term window in which to win the big one.. We're now in year 5 of this plan and am not really sure what other options get us there if it all goes wrong again.
Do they just put their hand up and say, Nah it didn't work out so let's go back to the lottery of the draft or do we keep finding ways to rinse and repeat a process that's not reaping the rewards that it should.

I think Stafford is a huge upgrade and worth the picks. Now if it was guaranteed that McVay would of used those pics to get a solid OL man and a thumper LBer, maybe not. I didn’t think Stafford would immediately turn the team around into SB Champs. But, the playoffs haven’t even started, what makes you think we won’t be Champs this year. Yes, Stafford has made some bone headed throws and has been very Goff like at times but he always gives us that chance to win. Imo, We should of won last week if McVay didn’t play to lose and possibly trusted his big trade he wanted so bad to get a simple first down or if Stafford would of worked the ball down the field a little more instead of going for the home run. Played right into Niners hands. We win the Division, the toughest division mission accomplished for regular season after his 1st year. Now, this is the time we find out what MS is made of and if McVay can get us over that hump

Simple answer………..Yes
Will probably be more about the OL and the defense. Defense isn’t close to last year’s level………………

It's not but then again they had a historically bad day against GB in the playoffs last year. I'd be shocked if they had a game that bad again.
To be fair Donald in GB last year………….
We all know what his health status was that game…………..

I think Stafford is enough of an upgrade. Here is what I see: Whether it is Goff or Stafford, McVay is the continuity. Is any quarterback enough to elevate McVay? Look, McVay is good...up to a point. It seems at certain points, no matter who the QB is, we hit our ceiling early and short of the goal. Physical teams with good pass rushes and that run well seem to be McVay's kryptonite. As I continue to watch the play calls and the patterns tied to the Rams pass plays, I am starting to see less creativity once the motion and alignment smoke clears.
A few weeks ago, Rams had 3 receivers to one side, and two of them run 5 yard outs. Not only does that put two receivers in the same area, but it allows the DBs to be close to one another. Pick Six. We ran something similar against the 49ers on Sunday and OBJ knocked down a pass headed for Kupp. Too many times, receivers are in close proximity to one another and that is a problem. Where are the deep crosses? I just think defenses figure McVay out after half a season and then the offense gets limited. I think this has happened nearly every season. Without his early security blanket, Todd Gurley, he becomes very conservative, something he was not when the Rams would go for it on fourth down in key situations when Gurley was a Ram. Players have to make plays. If they do, then any coach is a genius. But coaches have to put players in good positions to succeed too.

Ahhhh, because the Rams have demonstrably been proven to be useless against the Packers and 49ers, and they're only 2-5 overall vs. playoff teams this year.
Should our team manage to defeat the Cardinals in Monday night's NFC 'wild card' matchup, it will almost certainly then face the Packers in the postseason's divisional round.

McVay lost confidence in Goff and wanted a change. He landed Stafford who may be a bit better than Goff. Stafford had pretty good protection this year and generally succeeded but when that protection broke down he struggled like Goff did along with any other QB facing that situation. The only conclusion is the O-Line has to play better and protect the QB. I have been saying this for years. Give Stafford and Goff a decent O-Line, surround them with talent and they are capable of leading a team to the 'Ship.

I agree but that doesn't negate what was litteraly one of the worst playoff performances ever by a defense. I believe GB scored on its first 5 possessions which was a record or tied a record.
Just saying even though we had a better D last season it was irrelevant when we needed them.
Understood…………

Commish, honestly, you’re probably right but I’m a fan, the type of fan that puts the bad behind us and hope our true potential shows up. Once again, you’re probably correct BUT if we make it to the SB and win it, I will look so forward to telling you to STFU!

It's 1 game to put it all together. Jax beat the Colts in a meaningful game for the Colts. S@#! happens. We can beat anyone despite playing poorly the week prior. The constant negativity I will never get. Constructive criticism sure.

This is true. That team with Ferregamo got to the super bowl, so anything is possible. Especially, after the first round, we aren't dominating anybody. So, would need to be close to perfect. We have to hope Stafford doesn't make mistakes, and our stars make some big plays at the key moments. Then maybe they can eke out a couple of unexpected wins.

LOL!!
Back on January 30th, 2000, I was just as elated as any other long-time, true-blue Rams fan.
Should our team end up winning Super Bowl LVI, which I've never claimed was point-blank impossible, I'll be quite surprised yet also overjoyed.
As for me feeling that I have to 'STFU' following my team's first-ever Super Bowl victory in Los Angeles, and its first anywhere in 22 years, should that actually occur, you can post what you want but I certainly won't do any such thing!
Given my half-century-plus of support for the Good Guys, including from 1990-98 and '05-16, I would have the same justification to celebrate as any other Rams fan...

8-)

Stafford can make throws goff can only dream of . But of course he will also struggle with a bad oline ( 95 % of the qbs do ) and just as I got tired of goff's bad decisions and turning the ball over , I am kinda getting tired of staffs bad decisions . Staff is an upgrade but my main COMPLAIN with goff was the fact that he was careless with the ball and staff , in this area , is no different. Staff has 4 pick 6 this year ( although one or two were not his fault ) , but a guy like Rodgers has 3 in his ENTIRE CAREER .
