Rams got burned by Stafford contract

I get the risk of going for it. But this guy may thrown his final pass as a Ram. Back surgery is season ending and how much are you riding a 38 yo QB coming of surgery in 2026. Will be a big cap hit.

Also don’t think the Rams will be bad with Jimmy G. Obv not a contender for a chip, but still respectable.

I was thinking the same thing. He played them like a string fiddle . If he ends up being out for a while and Jimmy is winning games for us, a little competition might be good for the stretch run.

Matthew Stafford signed a 2 year, $84,000,000 contract with the Los Angeles Rams, including $80,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $42,000,000. In 2025, Stafford will earn a base salary of $16,000,000, a roster bonus of $4,000,000 and a signing bonus of $24,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $47,466,666 and a dead cap value of $112,333,334.

As I understand it, if he retires, the Rams are still on the hook for the cap hit.

The ghost of Gurley strikes-
Todd Gurley's last contract with the Los Angeles Rams was a four-year, $60 million extension signed in 2018, which included $45 million in guarantees, according to ESPN. However, the Rams released him less than two years later, in March 2020, due to concerns about his knee and a desire to manage their salary cap.

Rams pillars or walls aka Donald, Kupp and Stafford all seem to have gotten golden parachutes on way out. We’ll see with Stafford tomorrow.

I am so sick of these guarantees. How about we guarantee you if you play. Deshaun Watson crippled the Browns due to guarantees. This has gone too far. The way I see it the only thing that is guaranteed is that the fans continue to suffer because of the exorbitant pay increases the players are getting.

Man, you guys would turn on your own mother. Let’s remember this post when we are playing in the Super Bowl. At least let’s hear official word. 2 months ago we were saying Stafford gave us a bargain deal at $40M. It can’t be both.

now I think we are all jumping to negative town right now. But I will say this if his injury is that serious no way in hell will they not make a move for another QB.

And yes monster guaranteed contracts suck and not sure why the FO continues to do this. JMO

@ OP

Did I miss something? Did he have the back issue when he signed the contract? He did participate in all of the OTA’s a few months ago correct……………….

That why I was so pissed off the Rams gave him 2026. 2025 was a sunk cost. He either played this year, or he retired before season started. Stafford had 0 leverage to get the Rams to guarantee him anything for 2026.

lol..you may have been saying that. Nobody else was. I don’t care if this guy is your favorite player of all time and you just signed up to this site to follow his career.

Here are the facts:

The Rams had no incentive to pay him for 2026. Zero. If the Rams wanted him, at age 38, to be QB in 2026, then make him an offer AFTER 2025 is done.

And if Stafford was telling them, “If you don’t guarantee me 2026, then I’m sitting out 2025…then fucking call his bluff bc nobody is walking away from that 2025 money he was owed”.

This was horrible GM’ing. Could have been avoided. Should have been. It will cripple the team in 2026

There aren’t any moves to make with our cap situation. We are crippled at QB for 2025 and 2026 with Stafford cap hits.

I’m assuming if he’s done, then 2025 will be Jimmy. And 2026 will be a Jimmy + 2026 Rookie drafted. There isn’t the space to bring in another veteran

If you mean during the 2026 NFL draft, that would be quite liklely, however right now there's no one available that's better than Jimmy Garoppolo.

I'm not clear where you've gotten the idea that Kirk Cousins was on the Rams' roster last year, and therefore knows the system, the players and the coaches right now... :? ;)

RAM SEASON!!

Thank you, I thought I was losing my mind. Kinda reminds me of the Karty stuff last year. Stafford would play tomorrow if there was a real game.

You are the guy that wanted to cut Karty and fire Shula. So there's that.

How about we all calm down I think he will be fine. If not it will suck but we have a very capable backup who took SF to the Superbowl it's like the past with UDF backups.

Let's see how the next couple weeks play out.

was kind of joking about Cousins but I am sure he could pick it up pretty quickly. Hopefully Staff can play
