Jalen Ramsey Trade Implications: Post-June 1st Impact & Analysis

The Los Angeles Rams continue to be linked to a potential reunion with star cornerback Jalen Ramsey. With rumors of Ramsey seeking a new contract and to alleviate the Rams’ salary cap constraints, Ramsey was traded to the Miami Dolphins in March 2023 for a third-round pick and TE Hunter Long. Despite the mutual interest and Ramsey’s familiarity with the Rams’ system, a reunion with the Rams appears highly unlikely due to financial, strategic, and logistical barriers. Now that June 1st has arrived and the salary cap implications have changed, let’s take a look at the reality of the numbers and other considerations.

Been thinking all along its just too much to trade for Ramsey. I have a feeling he ain't giving any kind of discount to a new team. I still remember armored truck thing in Jacksonville. He's good but he's also about the money. And he already got himself a ring. I don't see that being a priority over money for him.

If Forbes really does look as good as McVay says it lessens the need. Even if Miami dumps him for a 6th or 7th we still have to eat his guaranteed contract. I saw somewhere we can cut him after 2025 but I think we will be on the hook for the contract he signed with Miami.
I just re-read your article. Ramsey would have to make it a 2-year contract spreading out the guaranteed $16 mil but I doubt he'd ever do that. We could basically pay him $16.6 mil this year then cut him next year. Still kind of expensive but I'd do $12-$13 mil to get the deal done.

The other consideration is Ramsey never being happy with the contracts he has signed. It gets old.

Like some in here have stated from the beginning, this deal will never work IF the Fins aren’t willing to eat some of the contract (which they have stated numerous times they aren’t willing to do) AND Jalen is willing to take less in general.
Fart in the wind here…
Juice isn’t worth the squeeze. I thought for a while all 3 parties (Rams, Fins and Ramsey) would have this figured out by now, but apparently we’re not closer today than we were 6 weeks ago when this went public.
Now that June 1 is here, I expect to see some major players Ava shortly, from CB to LB, OL… let’s see what we have to work w… No need to blow $20M in cap space this season on a ( aged) dog w a louder bark than bite.

If the Dolphins can't move him for an acceptable offer I bet we get him around the trade deadline.

Its too much to give up in my opinion. I'm willing to see what Durant, Kendrick, Witherspoon and Forbes can do for another year before we make any sudden decisions. Plus, we still have McCoullagh and Kitchens. I'll pass. I think this defense is going to take a huge step this season and we don't need any distractions or problems.

That is incorrect. Haven't you heard about the discord between McDaniel and Ramsey? Jalen doesn't take another snap with Miami. If they can't find a trade he's cut.
Frankly, if there is discord, I can understand it. McDaniel doesn’t impress me at all!

No, I have not. McDaniel is just another failed limb on the overrated Shanahan coaching tree.

I'm still pissed the Niners got a 3rd round comp pick for this douche. He looks as white as you get.

Isn't Mike McDaniel biracial, with a Black father and a White mother. He is of mixed heritage.
So not sure what you mean here, did I miss something? Or do you just hate white people?
LOL, jk...
but I am confused what or who you are talking about...?

I mean if I saw him walking down the street I would think he was white. The Rooney rule and the 3rd round comp pick was designed to help minority coaches get jobs but looking at McDaniel, I doubt he's ever faced discrimination in his life.

The issue is how much will Miami eat? I hope that the RAMS do not take on his full contract that would be a huge mistake and the reason is he is 6 years older than when we acquired him from JVille. Back then he was ascending player top CB in the league now he is a descending player not worth nearly the contract he signed based on age and his stats. I would do this deal if McVay really wants him for a 7th rounder and 10M forcing Miami to eat half his salary. At the end of the day Jalen only cares about Jalen he uses like he loved LA only to stokes the past fires but he is not the same player. He wants us to have nostalgia but the truth is he is not who he was yet currently has the the same contract (inflated do to present day) as he did 6 years ago.
The truth is Ramsey nor Miami are in a bargaining position with the RAMS or any other team. Jalen doesn't want to play for Miami and Miami does not want to pay for Jalen. We need to be super smart about this and say know until they come to us or let someone overpay for his services. A poster a couple weeks back posted a list of available or potentially available CB and I would rather several of those at a fraction of a price of Jalen and use our cap space prudently for injures that occur or a star player at the deadline like we did with Von.

After giving this potential acquisition considerable thought, and the initial excitement of having a seasoned shut down (yes aging) CB in our secondary, I am now opposed to bringing him in and pissing away our Cap space.
Let's find serviceable OTs, LBs, and CBs who are young, hungry, healthy, less expensive, and malleable.

Not sure what race has to do with anything, but in case you are wondering.
“McDaniel identifies as half-white and half-black. In an interview with ESPN, after he was hired as Miami's head coach, he explained his racial makeup. “First and foremost, I'm biracial. My mom's white, my dad's Black”

The race thing only came up because 49rh8r brought up if a minority coach goes elsewhere, you pick up draft pic.
Im only just stumped because H8r thinks he looks super white... and I just dont see that.

Man... normally you and I agree on a lot, but this dude looks more cuban to me than white...

Did you just put a Ricky Martin filter on him?
Ok, he looks "as white as you can get" in the context of someone calling him black.

Well, Mike McDaniel looks pretty much biracial to me.
This discussion reminds me of that "Seinfeld" episode in which Elaine believes that the guy she's dating is light-skinned black, while he thinks that she's Hispanic, yet it turns out that they both identify as white.
McDaniel may need to return the Dolphins to the playoffs this upcoming season, in order to keep his job in Miami... :? ;) :geek:

The Rams party line is to be slow and steady. Do not flinch. Jalen is NOT reporting to mandatory minicamp so the Dolphins are in a Mexican standoff with Jalen. Who will blink first?
If Miami refuses to cut him based on no suitors (too expensive) then Jalen blinks and goes back to his luxurious contract and plays for Miami at 24m.
If Miami realizes since it is after June first they should cut him to get him off the books and spread the dead cap out then Miami blinks first and cuts him thus saving the Rams draft capital and a less of a financial cost and commitment to Jalen which fits within our parameters.
Rams just need to see how it plays out sure their maybe other suitors like Dallas/Washington/possibly the Raiders but none are paying that high salary so if they blink and grab him so be it. There are other CBs out their Samuels and now that Alexander is a FA maybe one of those teams takes him or both thinning the prospective herd to one or two other teams who maybe interested.
This is a tough one maybe the brass likes what we got unless Jalens price is a steal.
Lastly Jalen may have some say where he plays. If he gets full price or close to it if released he will go to whatever team pays him that money I believe, but he may wants to go to the Rams if the $ are close. All the culture building and winning and even letting players go where they want (specifically Ramsey) may weigh in his decision. If Ramsey takes the most money even if Rams offer is close then this chapter is closed on Ramsey because that's all you will ever need to know about Jalen just another FOS money player.

I don’t understand the optimism with the defensive backfield.
Per an article on the Rams, L.A. was tied for the fifth-most passing scores surrendered (29) and sixth in net yards per attempt (6.5).
They need an upgrade!

No doubt they can certainly use an upgrade but I feel that with our improved pass rush and an extra year of experience we will be much better... I don't expect an elite defensive backfield but enough not to lose us games.

It was a good move claiming Forbes off of waivers. If you're the 16th pick of the draft you have talent. Apparently he wasn't a good fit in Washington's defense. And the previous coach is the one who drafted him.
The main knock on him is his weight. Or lack of. But he's gained weight this offseason. From 166 to 180. Still pretty light for a guy who's 6'1". Maybe he can add another ten pounds without losing speed? Whatever the case its a low risk move and they could possibly have themselves a gem at a position of need.

I acknowledge it's not all on DBs. Despite the young talent, the team was 22nd in sacks and the LB corp was poor. I think the defense was improved, but not at CB ... yet.

And he's under contract for 2 more years with an option for a 5th. This could end up being a great pickup just like DWill when he was younger as well as Shelton and Blythe. Nothing trades for Dotson and Corbett worked out really well for the Rams too.
